Personal networks

This seems to be the thing at the moment so I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon. Go to this site and put in a web address and enjoy looking at your personal network.

The Thinking Stick

U Tech Tips-Technology for Educators

U Tech Tips is a much larger network as we link to Edtech articles and other resources on the web. What a great tool to use when explaining the power of networks to both educators and students.

I started blogging in 2005 and found it such a powerful way to reflect and share my thinking about technology, this generation, and how we prepare students for their future not our past.

  1. That’s very neat! It’s nice to see the connections layed out graphically, especially since everything becomes networked and linked so easily and unconsciously, and to such a complex degree. Definitely makes you aware of the ‘web’ concept of the internet! Interestingly, if you punch in google, it’s a pretty small network!

  2. Karyn,

I believe it represents outbound links from your site. As it follows the links from your site to other sites it expands. The interesting thing for me is to see some of the overlap in the network (Where lines and dots cross each other). It’s interesting how small some clusters are and how others are far reaching. The U Tech Tips site is a much larger network in the sense that there are more outgoing links to different information sources on the web. Where the links from this site are more focused creating a smaller network.

I like that it only counts outbound links as that is my personal network. There may be inbound links but most I probably don’t know of; therefore they really are not part of my personal network. My personal network are those links that I have created to other information on the web that I have found relevant to me. Each person can have a personal network and together these personal networks make up a larger social network. I would be interested to see the actual sites that most of the links go to and see the other personal networks that are connected to this site. That would be powerful for students, to see that even if you only link to one person that network or link is far reaching opening up a network of knowledge.

  3. It’s like looking at a visual representation of bots crawling over your personal website. Interesting to look at is the difference between a flash based site and a html based site with or without flash elements. The bots can’t read the flash (no div tags, img tags, etc.) so the flash site looks very simple (even if it isn’t)
