5th Grade Podcasts

IÂ’m pretty pumped today as a class of 5th graders uploaded their podcasts today. They recorded a journal entry they had to write as part of a webquest on space. It was the teacherÂ’s idea which makes it all the more cool. Phil Kittower came to me before Winter Break saying he really wanted to take advantage of the Blogs and saw a way to incorporate podcasting into his lesson. The students were in charge from beginning to end. We used audacity which took one 45 minute lesson to teach them how to use (less for many) and then allowed them to record, edit and write their podcasting notes. Phil is as excited about this as I am and wants to start incorporating podcasts more and more into his teaching. I encourage you to visit Shanghai American School 5th grade blogs and have a look around. The students are free to write, and they do! They publish about 80 articles a day, mostly on their own without any guidance from teachers. They love their voice being heard and would love to receive a comment from you. So, if you have some time to spare and want to view life through a 5th grader, take some time to read their blogs.

I started blogging in 2005 and found it such a powerful way to reflect and share my thinking about technology, this generation, and how we prepare students for their future not our past.
