The good news is that kids rarely need to be 'taught' how to use the computer. Give them access to one and they soon outpace their parents (especially with me). When I give them access to the computer is when it gets old enough that I don't care if she breaks it or when I trust her not to break it (which wont be long). Besides, a godfather has to be good for something right?

As for a cell phone....I bet that by the time I cave in to that, cell phones will be long gone.

It makes increasingly less sense even to talk about a content system, because the core problem of “learning just in case” solves — the incredible difficulty, complexity, and expense of learning just in case — has stopped being a problem.

Is this quote correct? I can't decide if I think you really meant to say "...the core problem <b>THAT</B> "learning just in "<B>TIME</B>" solves ... has stopped being a problem."

So as you think of your own children....when do they get their first cell phones? When do you start teaching them on the computer, showing them how to search and where to search for information?

Hi Jeff,

I just read your last two blogs and love them!! They both have really made me think. As someone who doesn't like technology to begin with and is very sensitive to technology 'interrupting' interpersonal communication (I know I'm way old school), I see the change in the generation after us. I am constantly amazed (dismayed?) how they are carrying on multiple conversations via text message while they are talking to me. What is amazing about it, is how good they are at going back and forth while still being polite (for a teenager) and of course, how fast they are. I know I will be left in the dust (who am I kidding, I already am), but like every 'older' generation, it is something I have to get used to.

This blog is great too! It makes me think that eventually, children will be in charge of their own learning and education, choosing what they will study and how. The possibilities for highly motivated students are endless. This is very exciting. I am just sad that I will be sending my five-year-old into a school with six textbooks she has to march through in ten months. I totally agree with the unhappy alliance between textbooks and education. But I have always thought that. In fact I have been deleting sentences as I am still thinking about this post. Let's just leave it at that and to say, awesome post!!!

I would say this not so much a Revolution as Reformation.
The removal of power from the old Orthodoxies by the masses.
The 'High Priest's' are still standing at the front talking in a language that new one in the congregation understands any more. More and more of the congregation are learning to 'Read' and are starting to interprate the world for themselves.
The old orthodoxies will try as hard as possible to hold onto their power (No one expects the Spanish Inquizition).
Therefore its not so much Aldus Manutius as Martin Luther and where will the 95 Thesis will hung.
