Secret to success meme

Looks like I’ve been tagged with the secret of success meme from both Sheryl and Doug. First, not sure what counts at being successful. If it’s changing your wife’s sleeping habits…then I guess I qualify.

So here’s the charge:

List the top 5 to 10 things that you do almost every day that help you
to be successful. They can be anything at all, but they have to be
things that you do at least 4 or 5 times every week. Anything less than
that may be a hobby that helps you out, but we are after the real day
in and day out habits that help you to be successful.

1. Married MAWW

Most Amazing Woman in the World. Take care of her and she’ll take care of you.

2. Make appointments and stick to them

If I make an appointment with you…I’ll be there.

3. Send at least one Hallmark e-card every day.

The link on my toolbar just say “Send one a day”. Sometimes to friends, sometimes to random people I pass in the hall who look like they could used one. Sometimes it’s the little things.

4. Understand that every tech problem is a crisis to someone.

It could be paper stuck in a printer, a power cord that is unplugged, or a computer that is just having a bad day. Whatever the case understanding that there is no problem too small. No matter what the problem is treat it as if it was your problem and fix it as quickly as possible.

5. Answer every e-mail by the end of the day

I don’t always make it, but each day it’s a goal. I feel it’s important to at least send a response that I received the e-mail. I am glued to my e-mail during the school day. I don’t have an office per se, so my e-mail is my office. If you want to get a hold of me, need something from me. E-mail me. It is my office, and therefore, I’m always in.

6. Read at least 5 blog posts a day.

Usually a lunch time activity. Lunch with my computer and Pandora running in the background.

7. Laugh every day

Enough said

8. Start each day with a list of goals, and finish each day when you’ve accomplished your goals.

Time is irrelevant. If I don’t finish my goals I don’t sleep anyway. Know yourself, know your day. What happens when I don’t reach my goal…read here. I push myself harder than I probably should, but I end most days with a sense of accomplishment…and that makes getting up the next morning that much easier.

9. Put your pants on one leg at a time

Just like everyone else in the world.

10. Live It Like You Love It

My wife and I found this shirt while in South Africa 3 years ago. It was hanging in a shop that was closed. We were walking on the beach in Jeffrey’s Bay and when we saw it we had to have it. We postponed leaving the next morning until 9am so we could buy the shirt. It’s my wife’s shirt, and whenever life gets tough, money tight, or we’re not sure what to do. We remind each other of this. You only get one life so Live It Like You Love It!

  3. Jeff, Thanks for this great list. It is so helpful to have someone state clearly what they try to do each day. I especially like the reading 5 blog posts. I find that I either get carried away and look at the clock and two hours of reading blogs (and going to blogs they refer to) has past OR not reading at all because I am afraid the first thing will happen. I am learning to be more planned in the use of my Web 2.0 time. I also like the Hallmark card idea. Every day! wow! I like those, but I always hesitate because of how long it takes to choose, but if you do it everyday the time decreases!
