Blogs as Web-Based Portfolios Video
May 19th
Chad Bates my IT Director sent me this great video today. What I love is many of the points I’ve been making in my series of blog posts on blogs as Web-Based Portfolios (1, 2 and 3) come through in this video. It always makes me feel good when I see that others are thinking along the same lines as I am. In Part 3 I talk about the different systems schools can use. This school has gone with option 3 and it seems to be working well for them. Some great suggestions here on how to make your Web-Based Portfolio system work!

Options for a WBP Blogging System There are three different ways you can build a WBP Blogging system for your school. Each option has both positive and negative factors to consider. In the end a conversation with the educational technology people in your building will help to decide what is the best system for you to adopt.Option 1: Self-hosted SystemThe best system by far is to set up a self-hosted blogging system on your own school More >
Mining Twitter for Content

Take 14 minutes out of your day today or tomorrow and watch this video:
Web 3.0 from Kate Ray on Vimeo.
Is it sad that this excites me?
I love Tim Berners-Lee’s last statement:
“If we end up building all the things I can imagine, we’ve failed.”
This coming from the “father of the World Wide Web”.
The video really talks about now that we have all this information on the web how do we organize it and make it work for us?
In the past week I’ve radically shifted the way I use Twitter, that more closely aligns with this new semantic web approach. It’s been an eye More >
Software for 2010-2011
May 6th
It’s that time of year again as last week we started working on our student computer image for the 10-11 school year here at ISB. Trying to find the best software for students is always difficult as there are so many things to consider.
That’s what makes the Educational Software Wiki a great place to start when looking for what software you should consider for next school year.
I encourage you to have a look and if you know of a piece of software that isn’t on the list, help others out by adding it. Simply click the “EasyEdit” button and fill in More >

Finding the right Web-Based Portfolio Container Web-Based Portfolios (WBP) can come in all shapes and sizes. There are literally hundreds of programs and ways you can create a WBP. The issue then becomes which way is the right way? That I believe, needs to be determined on a school-by-school or district-by-district basis.
The most important idea to keep in mind when choosing a WBP is the flexibility it allows you in embedding content from other parts of the More >
Confusing Parents
May 1st
I’m sure you’ve heard by now the Principal in NJ that is asking parents to ban all Social-Networking sites from students. You can find his full e-mail to parents at the link or watch this interview below:
So basically I take two things away from this video:
1. Parents are the problem and need to be told by the school how to raise their children.2. That because “2% of kids are going to say something” we want you to ban all social-networking sites.
That’s funny because I’m sure that:
2% of kids have bullied on the playground yet we’ve never banned recess.2% of kids More >

(Part 1 of a series of blog posts to be made into a free PDF. Your feedback, ideas and thoughts are critical!)
The PurposeThe purpose of this PDF is to help schools looking at adopting Web Based Portfolios (WBP) as a form of assessment with students over a period of time. By adopting a web-based platform as a container in which to house portfolio content, schools give students a web-based vehicle with endless possibilities to create, collaborate and communicate their learning to the world.

If Only Time Really Was an Issue

<start rant here>
I’m tired….the end of the school year is drawing near and I’m tired of……
“If only I had more time”
I have news for you….you have just as much time as everyone else in the world. We all get 24 hours a day, 7 days every week, and 52 weeks a year. Nobody gets one minute more or one minute less.
Don’t tell me you wish you had more time to learn this tech skill.
Don’t tell me you wish you had time to learn how to use Twitter, RSS, Blogs, Wikis, and Podcasts.
Don’t tell me you’re too busy, cause I haven’t More >
