New media center with 10 days to go.

While I was out at school yesterday I took a tour of the new media center that will be ready in 10 days time for the start of school. Now, I’ve mentioned before how fast they build things here in China and hopefully this will drive my point home even more. Remember everything you see here will be (we are told) done in 10 days for students to show up and use.

The new media/library center. The wall of windows are all north facing letting in a lot of natural light and at the same time not exposing the computers and books to direct sun light. This shot is from the entry way and where the windows are the ceiling is about 30 feet high making the space seem very open.

Another view of the media center with the circulation desk in the foreground. One thing we did do in the floor plans was put outlets and network cables in the floor. We laid it out like a grid putting one every 4 meters. The average length of a laptop cord if you need to charge your battery is about 2 meters. This way no matter where you are in the media center you should always be in reach of an outlet and network port. We also have them every 4 meters around the walls and the outlets are in groups of four so that if we plug in a desktop there are enough outlets for the CPU, monitor, speakers, and printer or scanner.

The new cafeteria for the ms/hs students. A beautiful area that again will be done in 10 days time.

A view from the roof of the new building looking out over the soccer field. Beyond that is part of the 18 hole golf course that surrounds the school and you can just make out the East China Sea in the distance. That is also the new building in the foreground. You can see the windows on the first floor of the media center. The second floor is science labs and the third floor is music and art rooms. It truly is a beautiful setting for a school.

I’ll update the pictures in a couple days so that you can see the progress. To see larger images just click on the picture and it will take you to the image on flickr. The workers are working 24/7 to get this thing done on time for students. As amazing at it seems, this place with look completely different in 10 days time.

I started blogging in 2005 and found it such a powerful way to reflect and share my thinking about technology, this generation, and how we prepare students for their future not our past.

  1. Jeff, very sharp new design on the blog – I love it! Many stateside are eating our hearts out, drooling over your new media center – yikes! We’ll be watching you closely over there in China, finding out firsthand (e.g., not through our mainstream media) where the global conversation is really heading. Have a great year – Mark

  2. Drooling also taking place in Scotland – you lucky sod 😉

I can quite believe it will be ready. I’m always amazed at construction work. That said, I’ve just spent a week putting in one small kitchen floor. Hope your workmen are quicker!
